Super-sub Miller stars for Lancers

SUBSTITUTE Max Miller starred for Lancing Football Club in Saturday’s thrilling 3-3 draw at Redhill.

In a back-and-forth game, Lancers fell behind midway through the first half, before they led 2-1 at half-time. The hosts fought back to lead 3-2 but Miller, who set up Lancers’ two goals in the first half, equalised with six minutes to go.

Lancing manager Martin Gander said: “I was pleased with a point as it’s always a hard place to go as you know you’re in for a good, physical battle. They had also been on a good run and we’d lost 3-0 away to them last season.

“If I’d been offered a point on the drive up there, I would have taken it and said ‘thank you very much’.”

Lancing had the better of the early exchanges and Redhill captain Jon Difford blocked Shaheen Sadough’s shot, before the following corner was cleared.

Redhill started to get more into the game and Joe Bingham hit a post on 12 minutes. Lancers lost Sadough to a knee injury shortly afterwards – with Miler coming on – and Bingham powerfully headed the hosts into the lead from a free kick on 21 minutes.

Lancers levelled six minutes later when Adam Hunt played in Miller, who caused Redhill problems throughout with his pace down the right, and he squared the ball for Will Berry to sweep home.

Lancing went ahead five minutes before half-time when Miller again got clear down the right and crossed for Darren Boswell to net his 15th goal of the season.

Redhill made a strong start to the second half and equalised on 52 minutes when Niall Egan coolly slotted home after latching on to a headed flick-on.

Lancers stopper Joel Harding made a couple of excellent saves, before Redhill went 3-2 ahead with 12 minutes to go through Tyrone Pink.

However, Lancers made sure they returned home with a point when Berry got clear down the left and crossed for Miller to net from inside the six-yard box.

Redhill still almost went close to a winner but a great last-ditch tackle from Sam O’Regan ensured Lancers took a point from the game.

Lancers have Grant Philpott back from suspension for their home game with Crowborough on Saturday. Dan Turner is also back available and Lancing hope Danny Gainsford will recover from an Achilles injury. Adam Hunt serves a one-game ban.

Lancers then travel to Hailsham on Tuesday.
