It was Town’s first home game since November 27, after seven successive away games, but boss John Suter was disappointed with his side’s latest reverse.

He said: “Goals win games and we didn’t take our chances and Bexhill took theirs. We should have scored after five minutes but didn’t take it and then we fall behind on 12 minutes.

“It was so disappointing as we are not playing as well as we should be. I feel that we are not performing the way we should be, with the squad we have. When I look at the team on paper, it looks a lot better than what it does when it’s out on the pitch.

“It’s very difficult to put my finger on it and it’s very disappointing as we haven’t won in six games now and have conceded eight goals in our last two games.”

Steyning have dropped to sixth from bottom after a run of just two points from their last five league matches and Suter added: “Whatever team you run, whether it’s England or a team in West Sussex League Division 15, the manager is responsible for the results.

“We’re now in the bottom half and we’re on a disappointing run.

“We have to dig in, work hard, put the last six results behind us and try to pick up a result in our next game.”

Town had a great chance to take the lead early on when Mo Shuga’a fired wide.

Bexhill went ahead through a well-taken finish from Andy Atkin on 12 minutes. Town had chances to get back into the game, before the visitors struck twice in the closing stages.

Jacob Shelton made it 2-0, with Steyning appealing for offside, on 81 minutes, before Chris Cumming-Bart’s cross flew straight in on 86 minutes

Steyning: Jeal, Early, Finch, Parsons, Pickup, Shuga’a (Tewsley 65), Boxall, Towse, Levoi (Milner 73), Harding, Knowles. Unused: Dodd.
