Wick had lost 3-1 at Mavericks in league action last midweek and this time were knocked out of the Sussex RUR Cup.

A brace from Sam Blundell and goals from Mark Zydonik and Matt Evans saw Worthing United progress, to the disappointment of Wick boss Jon Tucker.

He said: “We just did not compete in this one.

“Worthing United are a very good side, well-drilled and compete really hard.

“We just did not win any tackles out there and we had no communication within the team, so it was very disappointing.

“If we want to be at the top of the league, we have to compete against sides like this.

“We had a few chances on the night and if we’d taken them, it could be a different game.”

It was the hosts who made the better start and they went ahead through Blundell on 19 minutes, after his smart turn and shot from the edge of the area nestled in the bottom corner.

The Mavericks made it 2-0 three minutes before the break as Zydonik smashed home a crisp half-volley after Wick had failed to clear their lines following a United corner.

Wick nearly pulled a goal back ten minutes into the second half when Karl Westbrook and Matt Noble linked-up but Noble failed to find the target with his shot.

United got a third 14 minutes from time when Blundell bagged his second of the game as he coolly slotted past Jordan Matthews.
