Turner strike earns Lancers victory at Selsey

LANCING Football Club joint manager Martin Gander was delighted with his side’s performance after they won 1-0 at Selsey on Tuesday evening.

The win keeps Lancers in the top six of the County League Division 1 table and Gander said: “We played very well and it’s a very good result. It’s nice to go away, win 1-0 and keep a clean sheet.”

Lancing gave a debut to central defender Danny Gainsford, who has joined from Ryman League Leatherhead, and he went closest for Lancers in a scoreless first half.

Selsey had an opportunity in the first five minutes, which was well blocked by keeper Tony Di Bernardo, before Gainsford headed over a Graham Martin corner.

Lancers upped their game in the second half and got the only goal on the hour-mark when Dan Turner was fed through by Dan McLoughlin and fired home from 20 yards.

Wayne Joseph and Sam O’Regan then had opportunities to double the lead, while Di Bernardo was largely untroubled at the other end as Selsey did not create any clear equalising opportunities.

Gander added: “It was a windy evening and we had the wind behind us in the first half, which meant the ball kept rolling away from us and didn’t help us.

“We played well in the second half, though, had more of the chances and were the better side, while they struggled with the wind.

“Danny Gainsford came in for his debut and won a lot in the air. It’s great to have him here.”

Lancers travel to second-from-bottom St Francis in the league on Saturday, before they head to Ryman League Premier Division side Hastings in the Sussex Senior Cup second round on Tuesday.
