LANCING Football Club ended their first month back in County League Division 1 unbeaten as they cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win at local rivals Shoreham on bank holiday Monday.
Shoreham took the game to their neighbours early on, and Lancers keeper Matt Evans was twice forced into smart stops to keep his side in the game.
Shoreham’s Gareth Green then flashed an effort wide on 20 minutes, before Lancers began to take control and three goals in 10 minutes effectively ended it as a contest
Lancers were awarded a free-kick on 23 minutes after a tangle between Wayne Joseph and Lee Eastman. Shoreham fans have become accustomed to Lee Denyer’s set-piece prowess and this was no different, as, from 35-yards out, he blasted the free-kick off the underside of the bar into the top corner.
If the opener was spectacular, Lancers’ second goal, three minutes later, was down to luck. Darren Boswell got free down the right-hand side, and his cross was diverted past Ronan Callaghan by Shoreham defender Josh Clayman.
Boswell turned and shot into the corner from a Graham Martin through-ball to add the third for Lancing on 33 minutes, and Darren Annis was then unlucky not to make it 4-0 shortly before half-time.
The second half was a cagey, scrappy, affair, although it was Lancers who continued to carve out the chances.
Neither side were able to add to their tally, though, leaving Mussels to target revenge in the FA Cup game at Middle Road this Saturday.
Gander saw his side’s 0-0 draw at Hassocks on Friday night as a point gained, despite playing against 10 men for most of the match.
Hassocks’ Kieran O’Callaghan was sent off for a foul on Wayne Joseph but despite several chances for Joseph, who had two efforts saved, Annis and Martin, who fired wide, Lancers had to be content with a point.
Lancers joint manager Martin Gander said: “Four points from two tough away games over the bank holiday weekend is pleasing.
“We had it won at half-time against Shoreham and just had to make sure we didn’t concede in the second half.
“They started well and Matt (Evans) made a couple of good saves, but with eight players out we did well and were comfortable.”
