United exit FA Cup

WORTHING United Football Club were knocked out of the FA Cup at the extra-preliminary round stage after a 1-0 replay defeat at home to Ashford United on Wednesday (August 21).

The sides had drawn 0-0 on Saturday - when Worthing United’s Ryan Bradley had a late penalty saved - and the visitors progressed on Wednesday through Wes Foord’s goal early in the second half.

In a game of few chances, Mavericks’ Bradley twice went close in the first half and Grant Philpott saw a free kick hit the underside of the bar.

Foord netted soon after half-time and Worthing United were reduced to ten men late on when sub Richard Hudson was dismissed for two bookings.

Mavericks joint boss Jason Rutherford said: “We had the better of the first half but there were few chances throughout the game.

“They had five at the back and we just couldn’t get in behind them in the second half.

“You felt that whoever scored first would win and that’s how it turned out.

“It’s disappointing to lose because there was a lot of money at stake.”

Southern Counties East Premier Division side Ashford bank £1,500 prize money and will travel to Peacehaven in the next round on August 31.

UNITED: McCarthy; Storrie, Denyer, McLeod, Philpott; Finney, Martin, Tidey, Paterson; Donnelly, Bradley. Subs: Hudson (Donnelly 20), Turner, Taylor (Paterson, Tidey 70), Gilmour, Simms.
