WORTHING United Football Club fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to Chichester City on Tuesday evening.

Jimmy Wild got through one-on-one to give the visitors the lead after seven minutes, before Dan Hegarty nipped in front of debutant United keeper James Shaw to make it 2-0 on 16 minutes.

United then switched form-ation, from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2, and got a goal back immediately when Pat Rose broke into the penalty area, evaded a few challenges and fired home.

Chichester keeper Jack Fagan, dual-signed with Ryman League Worthing, then made an excellent save to deny James Wotherspoon.

Mavericks substitute Lee Eastman shot wide, before United levelled on 70 minutes when Sam Blundell cut in, beat two players and shot home at the near post.

Dave Marsh went close to a winner for United but his 25-yard strike was superbly kept out by Fagan.

United boss Nigel Geary said: “After the first 25 minutes, I was quite happy to get a point as they’d run us ragged. We changed formation and got a goal back straight away and then played well and got the equaliser we deserved in the second half.”

Mavericks travel to Shoreham in the league on Friday evening (7.45pm).

UNITED: Shaw; Hall, Curnow, Philpott, Marsh; Taylor, Edwards, Rose, Wotherspoon, Elliott; Blundell. Subs: Eastman (Wotherspoon 58), Pawsey (Elliott 72), Hasan, Nagle, Evans.
