WORTHING United Football Club moved closer to sealing promotion from County League Division 2 on Saturday with victory over local rivals Storrington.
The Mavericks remained four points clear of second-placed Wick & Barnham with the win and they are still nine points clear of third-placed AFC Uckfield, with six games to go.
Despite being close to promotion, United boss Nigel Geary is still just taking each game as it comes.
He said: “We are getting closer to gaining promotion now but I have told the players just to take each game as it comes.
“Our main focus is just on the next game and making sure we don’t get too carried away with it all.
“We still have to face Saltdean and travel to Midhurst, who are both tough opponents.
“If we do manage to achieve promotion then we will focus on going for the title but making sure we go up is the first aim.
“I was really pleased with the performance again on Saturday. We scored four and should have had a few more, if I’m honest.
“The most pleasing aspect for myself at the moment is our defensive solidity.
“Saturday was the third straight game we have kept a clean sheet and in each of those Matt Grimstone has hardly had to make a save.
“We go again on Saturday when we host Steyning and, hopefully, we can get another win to move closer to our target.”
United led 2-0 after just ten minutes on Saturday. Sam Blundell fired the home side ahead on six minutes, before Grant Philpott made it 2-0 just three minutes later.
The Mavericks should have gone further ahead but Blundell, Ben Hall and Jacob Schilt all missed chances.
A difficult day for the Swans then got worse as Jake Norris received a red card on 30 minutes.
United made the most of their man advantage and kept the ball.
Schilt almost made it 3-0 ten minutes into the second-half but his strike struck a post.
Blundell did extend United’s lead on 80 minutes, with his 20th league goal of the season, to put him five clear in the top-scoring stakes in Division 2.
The victory was then rounded off when Aaron Hasan headed home two minutes from the end.
United host Steyning in the league on Saturday, while Storrington entertain AFC Uckfield in the quarter-finals of the Division 2 Cup.
