United on a roll and unbeaten in five

WORTHING United Football Club extended their unbeaten league run to five games on Tuesday evening with victory over Selsey.

After a tight first half, United went ahead six minutes into the second period. After a good build-up down the left, Lucas Mann got through and fired home off the far post.

Selsey then had a five-minute spell of pressure, which included Tom Chapman heading off the line, while United went close to extending their lead when Liam Baitup hit a post and Sam Schaaf pulled a shot wide.

United sealed their win on 87 minutes when Alex Thompson broke from inside his own half and side-footed home an excellent finish from 25 yards.

United boss Tobi Hutchinson said: “We played ever so well, it was probably our most complete performance of the season.

“It wasn’t pretty in the first half but we played some good football in the second half and could have and should have scored more.

“We’ve got ourselves in touch with the teams above us now, which is a nice feeling. The boys have worked really hard in the last five games and we’ll keep plugging away.”

Hutchinson felt United should have beaten St Francis on Saturday.

United dominated possession but were unable to break the battling visitors down.

Mann fired over, Liam Baitup had an effort tipped away, and Sam Schaff had an effort ruled out for offside, which contravened Hutchinson’s view of the call.

Leo Day and Roy Pook also had efforts saved by the impressive St Francis keeper as they pushed for a winner, but they ran out of ideas and had to settle for a point.

Hutchinson said: “I felt we should have won, we dominated but they sat back and we couldn’t break them down. We needed an early goal and the longer we went without scoring, the harder it became.

“I’ve got mixed emotions as I felt that Sam was onside and the goal should have stood, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

“Their keeper had a good game and it just didn’t fall for us, but I’m fairly happy with a point.”

United travel to high-flying Hassocks on Saturday and then host third-from-bottom Arundel on Tuesday.
