It always looked to be a tall order for Nigel Geary’s men making the trip to National League South side Eastbourne, who play three divisions higher.

An Elliott Romain double and strikes from Darren Lok and Miguel Baptista were enough to see United bow out at the second-round stage.

It’s been a tough few weeks for Mavericks and their latest loss was a fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions.

But this was always going to be a difficult test for Geary’s men.

Borough went ahead on 25 minutes as Romain headed home Sam Beale’s corner.

Romain then notched a second six minutes later finishing low past James Shaw. Baptista bagged a third for Borough on 35 minutes to cap off a crazy ten-minute spell for United.

Pat Rose pulled one back on 56 minutes to give Geary’s side some hope.

But that evaporated as Lok raced towards United’s backline before crashing a strike low into the bottom corner.
