The national team boss delighted Kevin Keehan and Scott Kirkwood by making contact after hearing about the Run5k4NHS project, which passed the £50,000 mark last week - having set out hoping to net just £3,000.

The pair's efforts led to hundreds of footballers, club staff and supporters across West and East Sussex each do a 5k run and gather in their own donations.

Southgate asked the duo how the initiative had started and how it had become a success. He praised them for helping the community in time of need and said it was a fine example to everyone in football.

Kirkwood responded by telling Southgate - who of course has close links to Crawley - what a good job he was doing as England boss.
