We weren't good enough all over the park '“ Geary

Worthing United Football Club boss Nigel Geary has warned his side they quickly need to start picking up points or risk becoming involved in a relegation battle.

United fell to a fourth successive SCFL Premier Division defeat on Saturday when they lost 3-0 at home to Peacehaven & Telscombe, who collected just their second win of the season.

Mavericks are now 16th in the table, just three points ahead of third-from-bottom Wick; however Geary also pointed out his side would now be 11th in the table had they won on Saturday.

He said: “We’ve got Crawley Down, AFC Uckfield and Broadbridge Heath coming up in our next three league games and we have to pick up some points.

“We’re down to 16th now but we’d made a good start to the season before the last four matches. We need to pick up some points to move back up the table as it’s such a tight league.

“One win can push you right up again but we’ve got to be picking up points here and there, you can’t lose five or six games in a row as it drops you right down the table.

“There’s a number of teams around us in the table who will go and win two or three games in a row at some stage, we’ve got to make sure we do the same otherwise we could end up in a relegation battle.”

Mavericks had a number of players missing through injury and unavailability on Saturday but Geary called his side’s performance unacceptable as they created little throughout the match.

Jack Phillips gave Peacehaven a 16th-minute lead and United keeper Matt Evans saved a penalty shortly afterwards.

United striker Alfie Gritt fired two long-range efforts just wide, before Peacehaven wrapped up the win with second half goals from Curtis Ford and Vitor Pestana.

Geary said: “We just weren’t good enough and all over the park we weren’t up to it.

“They are a good side and won’t finish where they are now. However, you have to be taking points when you’re at home to teams who are around you in the table and the performance just wasn’t acceptable.”

Mavericks are away to Crawley Down Gatwick on Saturday and have a number of players back available.

UNITED: Evans; Batchelor, Patching, Stideford, Marsh, Foster, Waller, Callaghan, Gritt, P.Elliott, Fenelon. Subs: McKerhan (Fenelon 45), D.Nagle (Gritt 78), Sparks.
