The Sussex County Football League Division Two club claims that Ryman Division One South outfit Eastbourne Town made contact with leading scorer Dominic Clarke before issuing a seven-day approach.

Westfield joint manager Duncan Jones said: “An illegal approach was made by Eastbourne Town for Dom. The club and the committee are incredibly unhappy with how the situation has been handled and as a result are in the process of a formal complaint to the SCFA.

“In no way is this a slight against Dom, who has handled a very awkward situation incredibly well. We’ve explained the incident, and the club’s stance, to both Dom and the squad and our job now is to concentrate on Saturday and pick up another three points. Dom for now remains a Westfield player, which we of course hope he will remain in the future.”

The 30-year-old Clarke took his goal tally for the season to 16 with a double in Westfield’s last outing against Rustington a fortnight ago. Town will be able to speak with the target man once the approach expires today (Friday).

Jones admits he now just wants to get on with the football, specifically a visit from bottom-of-the-table Saltdean United tomorrow. Kick-off at The Parish Field is 2pm.
