Worthing boss: Fightback to beat Bowers shows our character

Adam Hinshelwood believes Worthing have shown real character in following up their first league defeat with a come-from-behind win over a leading side.

Two second-half goals by sub Mo Diallo earned a 2-1 win against Bowers and Pitsea in Worthing’s first game at their new temporary home at Horsham FC.

It was a test for the Rebels after a 4-3 defeat at Leatherhead that had drawn some criticism from the boss.

Saturday’s win took Worthing top of the Isthmian premier, and although they’ve been overtaken by Carshalton and Cheshunt, they have a game in hand on those two sides.

Hinshelwood admitted the pressure was on with the side 1-0 down to Bowers on the back of the Leatherhead loss – and he was delighted his players showed they could handle it.

“We asked for a reaction after the Leatherhead game, where too many were off the pace, and they delivered it,” he told the Herald.

“Against Bowers Ollie (Pearce) missed a penalty then they went up the other end and scored. There were a few looking around and asking if we had enough character to deal with the situation, but we dusted ourselves down, got on the front foot and showed a terrific response.

“We got a bit lucky with the goals but worked hard and created chances. It was so important to bounce back quickly after losing at Leatherhead and we did it.”

Hinshelwood has been delighted by the goals – and attitude – of Diallo, the striker who signed after impressing on trial in pre-season.

“He’s shown a real desire. He’s doing extra training sessions and when someone has that approach you hope they will be rewarded with goals and he has been.

“We’re lucky we have Mo, Ollie and Dayshonne Golding all scoring goals and wanting starting spots.”

So far, the fact the Mackerel Men have been unable to play at Woodside Road – where further work is needed on their troublesome pitch – has not affected them.

Hinshelwood said: “The pitch and facilities at Horsham are brilliant and we thank Horsham for their hospitality. It’s a short distance away and the fans travelled in great numbers.”

Other ‘home’ games will follow at Horsham, starting with Tuesday’s clash with Bishop’s Stortford. Before that, Worthing go to Margate on Saturday.
