Worthing running out of opponents - but they will play on

Worthing boss Adam Hinshelwood watched his squad sweep aside a young Loxwood side in their latest friendly – then admitted: We’re running out of opponents.

The Mackerel Men beat the Magpies 9-0 in another useful work out for the squad, who have been back together for a month enjoying training and any friendlies the club have been able to arrange.

But with many clubs not having got their players back together – and now even those who did reconvene for the SCFL Shield coming to the end of their restarted season – it doesn’t look like there will be anyone else for Worthing to play.

Nevertheless they plan to carry on training until the end of May and they’ll stage in-house matches to try to keep the players engaged in something like competitive action.

Hinshelwood said: “Training’s been good and it was nice to play Loxwood and get more minutes into players’ legs. We pretty much gave two different teams 45 minutes each.

“We’ve been wanting to keep the players in the rhythm of playing games because that’s better than just non-stop training, but there aren’t many more teams we can play.

“We’ll carry on training until around the end of May, so until then it may just have to be in-house games. Then we’ll break for three weeks or so before pre-season.”

Worthing are putting together a programme of friendlies that may include a game against a Brighton XI at the Seagulls’ training ground.

The full schedule will be announced soon.
