YMCA's Potter says '˜Stupid mistakes cost us FA Cup progress'

Horsham YMCA assistant manager Dean Potter blamed ill-discipline which led to two goals during their 3-2 home defeat by Hollands & Blair in the FA Cup.

He took charge of the team in place of manager Pete Buckland, who was serving a one-match ban.

Potter said: “Football is all about discipline at crucial times and that’s what’s cost us today.

“The penalty which they said was an off-the-ball incident with a trip and for the free-kick down down there where we’ve given away a cheap free-kick and they’ve managed to score.

“We were 1-0 up and Sam Schaaf missed a great chance to put us 2-0 up and if had done that we would have gone on to win the game.

“I thought Tim Gilbert was superb at the back - their No.10 (Rob Denness) was a very good player, real handful, strong and Tom’s been struggling with an injury and was touch and go if he’d play today but he managed to get through the fitness test.

“It would have been nice to have had a good FA Cup run and I am not going to lie, I don’t like to lose games. But the main thing this year is the league.

“There were a lot more positive things than negative today and as long as we learn from that ill-discipline and making stupid mistakes I definitely feel we are going in the right direction.”

Potter praised the team display played out on an immaculate-looking pitch in sunshine and temperatures in the mid-20s centigrade.

He said: “Over the 90 minutes I think we’ve actually played well. For the first 45 minutes we’ve started off well, they’ve got in with a ten minute spell but we’ve got the goal. Even in the second 45 minutes I thought we done well.

“There were a lot of good performances. It was a hot day and I am gutted about the result but as a performance, I am reasonably happy with that.”
