Gary's four give Littlehampton hope

LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club kept alive their slim hopes of promotion with victory over Stirlands on Saturday.

They now trail second-placed, Steyning, by 34 points with three matches left '” all away.

Littlehampton opened with Chris Kirkham and Chris Heberlein, with an eye on the future composition of their line-up. They batted well together, bright and adventurous, without taking unnecessary risks. Dorkings eventually separated them, trapping Kirkham lbw with the score on 32.

Heberlein was joined by his regular opening partner, Geoff Cole. While Cole dug in almost as far as a cemetery worker, Heber-lein took the attack to Stirlands, thumping left-arm spinner Harjinder Singh for 16 in one over, before perishing on the long-on boundary, caught by Nick Hunt for 46.

Cole's progress was not so much sedate as funereal, eight runs coming from his first 70 balls. It was a bit like pulling teeth at times, but you need someone to tick it over gently, and let others build around him.
