GOLF: Rustington's Joshua, 13, hits a hole-in-one

A YOUNG Angmering golfer showed he is well above par for his age when he became the first junior to get a hole-in-one in an adult competition at Rustington Golf Centre.

Joshua Glossop, 13, was playing at Rustington in the Winter League pairs competition on the 139-yard, par three, fourth hole, when the ball went straight in from his tee shot.

Joshua, who has been playing golf since he was five, only became involved on a serious level in the past three years. Not only is it his first hole-in-one, but he has family bragging rights over his father, Martin, who has not accomplished it.

A delighted Joshua said: "I just didn't know what to do when it dropped in.

"I knew I had hit it well and it pitched quite near the hole, but when it went in the cup I was absolutely gobsmacked. It was a great feeling.

"I was partnering my dad and he has been a great influence on my game, but I don't think he is best pleased that I've hit one before him."

Martin was just as shocked to see the ball drop.

He said: "We were both flabbergasted, and just looked at each other in amazement.

"He has beaten me to it, and he has been well and truly rubbing it in as well.

"We know this makes Josh the first junior to hit a hole-in-one in an adult competition at the club but, from checking the records, he seems to be the very first junior here to do it at all, which is fantastic."

There could be more hole in ones from the young golfers in the area, as Joshua is passing on his skills and teaching others about the sport at Ham Manor Golf Club, and at his school.

He assists the club pro Matt Cole in giving lessons to up-and-coming golfers under the age of 10.

Joshua, and fellow Rustington team mate, nine-year-old Charlie Strickland, also play for the Sussex team, and will face Scotland Under-14s at Littlehampton next month.
