Longley, 15, has been in the England under-16 regional squad for the last two years but went to Madrid with the full under-16 team to play Spain.

The team consisted of four boys and four girls who played foursomes and singles matchplay on both days. Although England were defeated by Spain overall, Longley halved his singles match on the second day and took his foursomes match to the final hole with his playing partner Oliver Clarke before losing.

Longley said: “It was such an amazing experience to represent England. I am really hoping to achieve some top finishes in my tournaments this year to give me a chance of getting in the England under-18 squad in the near future.”

His long-term goal is to get on tour and he has achieved some impressive results over the last couple of years.

Last year, he was the winner in his age category at Oceanico World Kids golf tournament in Portugal, finished fifth in the Scottish under-16 Championship and his biggest achievement to date was becoming the first amateur to win on the players’ tour in September at West Surrey Golf Club.

He beat a strong field of professionals and his round of minus seven set a new course record of 64.

This year, Longley has finished third in the Faldo Series at Moortown and last month won the Shoreham Officer Bowl at Wothing.

He finished his GCSE exams at Worthing High last week and plans to attend Worthing College in September, studying A level sport to fit alongside his golfing commitments.

Next month, he will travel to Edinburgh to play in the Scottish Boys Championship. He also has the McGregor Nations Cup next month, the McGregor Trophy at Radcliff on Trent, the North of England Boys Championship and the Italian Boys Championship to come in September.

Worthing High School PE teacher Paul Gill said: “Nathan has had a great year so far with the pinnacle being representing England for the first time. He certainly has a blossoming golf career ahead of him and we are very proud of his achievements at Worthing High School.

“We all look forward to hearing how he gets on this summer and wish him the very best of luck in all his future golfing endeavours.”
