The club announced the decision on Friday but Hildreth will oversee the club’s remaining games this season as they bid to stay in National League Division 1 – and aim for a late play-off push.

Hildreth said: “I’m bitterly disappointed with the club’s decision as I’ve dedicated and devoted so much time to the club, not just as coach but behind the scenes too.

“With the restricted resources, we were unable to bring in other players or another import to help strengthen the side and the commitment and availability of players to practice also made things difficult.

“After the club made the decision, I was advised by many people just to walk away now but that’s not in my character.

“I go in to everything I do with 100 per cent and want to be successful. I also didn’t want to let down all of the players, many of whom I brought to the club.”

In a statement, Thunder chairman Frank Gainsbury said: “We are enormously grateful for the time and effort Daniel has devoted to the club over the past few seasons and Daniel has agreed to continue until the end of the season, devoting as much work as is needed to ensure that Thunder seek to retain our top-flight status.

“No replacement coach has been appointed and we will make a further announcement in relation to this matter when the time is appropriate. In the mean time the focus of the club must be on the remaining fixtures of the season”
