HOCKEY: Local weekly round-up

THE weather did its damage to some of the local hockey fixtures at the weekend as Worthing's match at BBHC in the Kent/Sussex Regional League was postponed due to a flooded pitch.

In Division 1 of the Sussex League Penguin's game against South Saxons was postponed, while Worthing 2nd's game against Crowborough was also off.

Of the surviving games in the same division Southwick won 5-4 at Lewes and Worthing 3rd continue to struggle after going down 7-2 at Eastbourne 3rd.

In the Sussex Ladies League, Worthing went down 3-2 at home to Burgess Hill, despite dominating the game.

Littlehampton's promotion challenge in Division 1 of the Sussex Open League took a setback at the weekend as they lost 3-2 against Worthing 4th.

Littlehampton got off to a good start when Steve Jenkins' forward ball was heavily deflected and bounced kindly for Damien Jenkins to guide home after 10 minutes. Worthing got themselves back into the game and deservedly equalised from a short corner and were ahead before the half-time interval.

They added a third just two minutes into the second half but Littlehampton fought back to pull a goal back with 15 minutes remaining.

Jon Miles finished from a superb ball from David Macdonald, but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Steve Jenkins hit the post while Miles had an effort cleared off the line.

LITTLEHAMPTON: Keeley, Phillips, Thompson, D.Macdonald, S.Jenkins, D.Clark, Warner, Miles, Judd, D.Jenkins, Windust. Sub: J.Macdonald.

Worthing Hockey Club have announced they will host the Sussex Men's Finals weekend at St Andrew's School over the weekend of May 8 next year.

The first team will need to win their semi-final match against Eastbourne in April to be able to compete in the finals.

The second team also have a tough semi- final away at East Grinstead, also in April. The vets side, who finished runners-up last year, start their campaign with a quarter- final away at Southwick on November 29.

Worthing's next match is against Crawley at home on Saturday where they will be without goalkeeper Chris Binns.

So 48-year-old Chris Wheeldon will come into the side for Saturday and Sunday's HA Trophy 3rd round match at Long Sutton.
