It’s been a stuttering start – Dawson

WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club head coach Kieron Dawson admits his side have made a stuttering start to the season but is pleased with the points return they have.

Saturday’s win away to Barnes was Raiders’ second successive win, after an opening-day defeat at Clifton.

Worthing lost two of their opening three games last season and on his side’s start this year, Dawson said: “We’re still not our vintage selves yet and are probably only in third gear, so there’s plenty of room for improvement.

“It was nice to get the bonus point win on Saturday and we’ve made a better start than last year but it’s still been a stuttering start at best.

“However, we’ve got points on the board this year, which we didn’t do last year.”

Raiders sit eighth in the table with nine points and are set to be strengthened by returning players in the coming weeks.

Captain Scott Barlow played his first game of the season on Saturday, while Finlay Coxon-Smith should return in a few weeks and Ben Loosmore will be available for three games in three weeks’ time.

Alex Nielsen will miss Saturday’s match with bottom-of-the-table Cornish All Blacks, so Matt McLean and Matt Farnes could come into contention.

Dawson is also still looking to attract more players and said: “We’re still looking to recruit and are looking at all avenues.

“The club has been pro-active and supportive but there’s been ten or 11 players that have fallen through at the last minute.

“It’s been frustrating but we’re still working away at getting new players on board.”
