Lewis selected for England South squad

THE ANGMERING SCHOOL student Lewis Edwards will be part of the England South side who take part in the Sainsbury’s School Games later this year.

Edwards, who is a wheelchair basketball player, will be in action at the games in Manchester in September.

The 17-year-old will be one of just 1,500 athletes competing in the 12-sport games.

Edwards will live in the athletes village for the three-day competition, while also attending the opening and closing ceremonies.

The games is set to draw large crowds and Edwards is excited by the prospect of being involved.

He said: “I’m really happy that I have been selected to represent England South in wheelchair basketball at this year’s Sainsbury’s School Games.

“My main aim for this year is to do my best to help England South compete for a medal and better last year’s bronze.”

Edwards will join an illustrious list of Paralympic and Olympic athletes who have been part of this event before going on to represent Team GB.

Paralympic champions Hannah Cockroft, Ellie Simmonds and Jonnie Peacock have all competed, while world-record breaking swimmer Adam Peaty, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, world junior champion heptathlete, high jumper Morgan Lake and sprinter Adam Gemili have gone on to compete in the Olympics.

Minister for sport Tracey Crouch believes the games is continuing to grow and said: “The Sainsbury’s School Games continue to go from strength to strength and I am pleased to see so many young athletes embracing this fantastic opportunity to showcase their talents.

“Grassroots sport is where it all starts.

“It’s where the coaches and sports teachers mould our future stars, inspiring generations to get involved and be the best that they can be.”
