Lisa helps England to Euro team title

WORTHING-based tenpin bowler Lisa John called winning the European Women’s Championships team event in Holland earlier this month the best experience of her life.

John helped the six-player England team to the gold medal in the prestigious event with victory over Germany in the final, after a hard-fought win over Sweden in the semi-finals.

She said: “It was brilliant to win and it was the best experience of my life.

“I’m pretty sure England have never won the team event before, so it was very special.

“We were pretty much the underdogs going into the last four. But we beat Sweden by 30 pins, which is a really close win in tenpin bowling, to get to the final.

“The final was then held in a theatre, so we had a day off while two lanes were built. It was a great setting and we beat Germany by 130 pins.

“We had such a great team and winning the tournament was the best thing I have done, it was absolutely amazing, especially as Holland put on such a fantastic show.”

The England team have now qualified for the World Championships, which take place in Las Vegas next year and John is hoping to be involved.

She was also competing in three other events in Holland and finished eighth in the doubles, 15th in the trio event and 22nd in the individual competition, which she was slightly disappointed with.

Looking ahead to the rest of the year, John is hoping to compete in the World Singles Championships in Cyprus in September, although she is looking for more sponsorship to help fund the cost.

She was thankful to her sponsors – Spofforths, Vagg Flooring, AYP Advisory and Bennett Griffin – for contributing towards the cost of competing in Holland.
