WORTHING Thunder Basketball Club’s seven-game winning run in EBL Division 1 came to an end on Saturday (January 7) with a 94-90 defeat at home to Brixton Topcats.
In an entertaining match, which swung one way to the other, Brixton led 24-16 at the end of the first quarter and were 47-44 up at half-time.
Vinnie Darpino inspired Thunder into a 57-50 lead early in the third quarter and they led 74-72 with one stanza to play.
Thunder were not behind in the last quarter until the last minute but Brixton finished strongly as turnovers cost Thunder, who gave away 28 in total.
Darpino led Thunder’s scoring with 32 points, while Hank Rivers had anouther double-double with 29 points and 17 rebounds.
Marcus Knight topped Brixton’s scoring with 28 points and Papa Demba-Kasse sank 21.
Thunder captain James Brame said: “You can’t win a game if you give away 28 turnovers.
“We lost to the better team on the night but one loss could cost you the title in this league and now we need to beat Bristol and hope they slip up in another game as well.”
