‘My finest hour’ says champ

The Battle shooter won the men’s double trap event in Glasgow on Sunday to claim his second Commonwealth gold medal having triumphed in the double trap pairs four years ago.

Scott told Observer Sport: “It was 10 times more satisfying (than his pairs victory in Delhi). You could see by the reaction on my face (at the moment of glory) how I felt. Without a doubt it’s the highlight of my career so far.”

England ace Scott beat compatriot Matthew French in a dramatic and high quality final at the Barry Buddon Centre in Dundee.

French dropped just one clay out of 30, but Scott nailed every one to secure his second major title of the summer following his victory at the European Shotgun Championships in Hungary.

“I was really pleased to do that in the final,” Scott continued. “He (French) shot an amazing final which would normally win a final outright and conditions were far from perfect.

“I was nervous in the qualifying rounds, but I wasn’t nervous in the final. Russell Mark, who’s won Olympic gold and silver medals, said that’s the best final he’s ever seen.”

Scott and French previously hit 27 of their 30 targets in the semi-final to go into a three-way shoot-off with India’s Asab Mohb to reach the gold medal match.

Mohb was first to miss, guaranteeing a British one-two and a second gold of the day following Charlotte Kerwood’s success in the women’s event a couple of hours earlier.

The competition began with 18 competitors tackling five rounds of 30 targets and the top six advancing to the semi-finals.

Scott came fourth in that stage, albeit with the same total as those in second and third, via scores of 27, 24, 27, 30 and

24 for a total of 132.

“With it being live on the BBC, quite a few people got to see it and I got a lot of very positive comments from people all over the world,” Scott added. “I performed extremely well and hopefully now I can get a bit of sponsorship.

“I’ve now won the Europeans and Commonwealths back-to-back, which I don’t think anyone’s done really, and that’s pleased me a hell of a lot.”

Scott and his fellow English shooters headed into Glasgow on Wednesday to carry out some media interviews and he briefly spoke on the BBC’s Today at the Games show that night.

The 29-year-old wished to say a big thank you to the coaching of former Olympic gold medallist Ahmed Al Maktoum, plus the support of girlfriend Hannah Gibson and father Michael.
