He is believed to be Lance Corporal C. Lisher, from the 12th Royal Sussex Regiment.

This name, along with BEF (short for British Expeditionary Force) 1918, is written on the back of the photograph.

It was sent in by Mrs Marjorie Semmence, of Mary Day Close, School Road, Caddenham, Ipswich.

She explained that she found it with her father’s belongings some years ago.

“I do not know if the young man was a special friend but it is my father’s writing and he was in the Army himself,” she said.

“I went to Worthing High School myself and remember a Lilian Lisher, so I thought the lance corporal might be from a local family and that someone in Worthing would be interested.

“I was born in Worthing in 1922 and lived in Valencia Road. I was married at Tarring Church in 1940. My husband was demobbed in 1946, when I and two daugthers moved to Suffolk.

“Although I have been here nearly 70 years, Sussex with sea and Downs is still ‘home’! I now have four daughters and a son, 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.”

Among memories of Worthing, Mrs Semmence said her uncle, Mr Ronald Chaffer, lived in the town all his life.

“He said that there was once a row of houses at Black Rock, Brighton, where the Marina is now,” she recalled.

“The houses were gradually claimed one by one by the sea and they used to pay a penny to walk through to the remaining house, until that disappeared!”
