European folk dancing with the Worthing Grammar girls

These photos were brought in by Sheila Barns (née Fogden) and show Worthing Grammar School girls in 1947 or 1948.

Sheila, of Ringmer Road, Worthing, recalled that the photos were taken at a folk dancing performance for their parents, by the upper or lower VI girls.

She said: “We’re all dressed in clothes to signify the country which the dance came from.

“I can’t remember exactly which country it was, but it was a European one, possibly Hungary.”

Sheila also said the gymnastics teacher at the school helped the girls to choreograph their dance.

Sheila is pictured fourth from left in the middle row, in the photo above, and just to the left of centre in the smaller photo, behind the fourth girl from the left who is kneeling.
