Memories of Southfield Road

They spoke of Butchers Lane, now Forest Road.

“Porky” Knight, an airgunner, was killed in the war.

I knew the Swan family, No 8 and 14. Pre-war, they had a fishmonger’s round, and kept the horse on their premises.

They kept pigs at the “piggery” in East Worthing into the late 1960s.

Mr Salter was a shoemaker, in a shed at 3 Wigmore Road, just off Southfield Rd. Later George Bower took over.

I do remember Carter’s bakers shop in Sompting Road, in a row of cottages lived in by Jones, the flower sellers, and the Colbournes.

Other memories include Pollicutts, and later Jex, in the newsagents at the end of Southfield Road.

This was demolished to make way for access to the new B&Q store, now Alexanders.

Marriott’s Garage, Bugen’s the butcher, Knowles bakers, I could go on, but that’s enough for now.
