Notes from the changing room

IT was always going to be a tough encounter on Saturday and the game did not disappoint.

It was a ferocious affair from the first minute of the game, which ended up in a 30-man brawl on the hour mark. But, all that aside, the Raiders played some great rugby, the better of the two sides and, ultimately, that was the difference.

The Raiders’ ability to score from anywhere was again on display, with some great attacking play from inside their own half. With Chinnor dispatched, we now move up a place to fifth and this week we play fourth-placed Taunton. It does not get any easier.

Looking back at the game, it was nearly a complete performance from the team, with a couple of lapses in concentration letting Chinnor in for their tries but, overall, it was a fantastic display of what we can do.

It sees us unbeaten in five games and with a return of 36 points from a possible 40, since our defeat to Launceston away in early November.

This week, like I said, we visit Taunton. Those of you who were at the home fixture will remember a last-minute drop goal snatched victory for Taunton with the last play of the game. It was a cruel ending to the game and a defeat that hurt the squad.

Revenge is not the motivating factor here but continuing the momentum we have built up. Taking each game as it comes is proving successful and, if we keep doing that, who knows where we can finish in the league.

As some of you may be aware, Jack Metters has left us to play in Bahrain for a few months, before starting a stint in Australia with a Sydney-based club.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do that some six years ago. It will definitely be a great experience for him and will help his rugby career no end. Everyone at the Raiders wishes him well and will look forward to the stories from Bahrain’s top driller.

It’s a long trip down to Taunton this weekend, but all your support on these tough away games is much appreciated and helps no end.

We are back at home the week after against Lydney. Here is to six on the bounce and another cracking game of Rugby. Raid on!
