Guests were invited to pre-book one of more than 350 free tennis coaching or free-play places on offer during the day. Coaching sessions were delivered by West Worthing Club’s resident coaches and overseen by the head coach, Jonathan Pocock. All age ranges and abilities were catered for.

The afternoon saw a friendly American Tournament run for both non-members and members of the club.

The tournament was supported by local MP, Tim Loughton and his wife, Elizabeth, who both participated in the competition. Players were joined by their family and friends afterwards, in the club lounge, for afternoon tea.

For those who preferred more informal play, the club’s mini and full-sized grass courts were available for free-play sessions. There were also a variety of sports for visitors to try, including squash, racketball, pétanque, croquet and fitness.

West Worthing chairman William Naunton said: “As a community amateur sports club, West Worthing Club is committed to bringing our sports to people of all ages, abilities and from all walks of life.

“With the wide range of sports on offer at the club, we are able to give a great experience to all the family.

“Following on from the success of our open day, we hope that many people will join us at Steyne Gardens on Saturday, July 9, when the Davis Cup trophy tour comes to Worthing.”

West Worthing head coach Pocock said: “It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying our courts during the day. We’ve had children as young as three years old experiencing tennis for the first time, right through to regular adult players getting competitive during our American Tournament.”

As part of the Great British Tennis Weekend, West Worthing are offering non-members the opportunity to join at a discounted rate of 12 months for the price of ten with no joining fee.

The prices are valid until May 31, 2016. Email [email protected] or call 01903 247270. Further details can be found at West Worthing Club’s website www.wwc.org.uk/membership.
