Page rescues point for leaders

BEXHILL United clinched a last gasp 1-1 draw against Wadhurst United to maintain an unbeaten run which has seen them hit the front in Sussex Division Three.

This result may have halted a seven match winning sequence, but they still possessed the look of a side well-capable of securing promotion.

Had they enjoyed the rub of the green with two contentious disallowed goals and two more goal-line clearances, they may well have claimed another handsome victory over a team which still has designs on going up.

Manager Bill Trivett said: "With a few minutes to go I would have quite happily taken a point, but I think there was a good case for saying we didn't win because we didn't get the breaks and not because we didn't play well. Things didn't really seem to fall for us and I felt they (the two goals that were ruled out for offside) were two bad decisions."

Evidently so did Dave Carey, who was denied taking his seasonal goals tally to 17 by virtue of being on the wrong end of the linesman's flag.

But there was certainly no offside about the leveller. Wes Tate, who settled straight back into the side following a two-week ban, received a throw in from Steve Mote and delivered an awkward cross which rebounded off unsighted goalkeeper John Sutton to the grateful Alex Page.

No-one could say the goal hadn't been coming, even if it appeared not to be Bexhill's day. Admittedly Wadhurst sought to protect the 13th minute lead given to them by Darren Wilson, but not to the extent that they found themselves almost continually on the back foot during the second half.

Trivett added: "I think we were good value for a point. We just kept working and working right the way to the end of the game, their attitude has been absolutely brilliant. The main thing was definitely not to lose and I think we're well on course."
