Pavilion beat Worthing in Top Club competition

Worthing Pavilion progressed into the fourth round of the National Top Club competition with a 3-2 win over Worthing.

Simon Davey and John Westlake gave Pavilion a great start with wins in the singles and two-wood singles respectively, while the rink of Colin Davey, John Winkley, Graham Ives and Alan Vidler secured a narrow win in the fours to clinch the final point and send Pavilion through.

Pavilion also have representation in the national senior pairs as Terry Honnor and Ray Leggett reached the area semi-final with a one-shot win over Chichester.

In a new indoor national competition, Pavilion secured a 8-0 win over Preston in the Fantastic 5’s to send them to the top of their area. Pavilion’s other entry are also in pole position to progress into the knock-out stages.

In the county pairs, Ray Leggett and Gavin Beven went down 21-16 to Peacehaven.

James Brennan lost his under-25 quarter-final tie 21-20 to Newhaven’s Luke Gray after a gruelling 29-end contest.

Pavilion C had mixed fortunes in Division 1 of the West Sussex League. They collected eight points from a 88-58 victory against Pagham as the top rink of Franco Sacco, John Eldridge, Rick Baumann and Alan Vidler won 36-10.

Pavilion then lost on all four rinks in a 95-63 defeat to Chichester, before a 81-77 reverse at Southbourne when they collected two points.

Pavilion A went down 85-68 to Chichester but gained four points. Alan Muzzell, Ken Hewitt, John Deacon and Malcolm Hosking won 18-14 and John Westlake, Gerry Shallis, Gareth Beven and John Frew were 23-20 victors.

In Division 2, Pavilion B claimed a 90-82 win against Arundel to remain second in the table. The top rink of George Rhodes, Phil Carter, Eric Henshaw and Dave Thomas won 26-15 and the other winning rink was Brian Bodicoat, Peter Woods, Gordon Kibbles and Chris Scott, 21-13.

Pavilion ladies lost 41-34 in the league to Norfolk, while they won 18-16 on a friendly rink.

Tarring Priory progressed in the Abergavenny Cup with a 45-26 victory against Hotham in the second round tie.

The Priory away rink of Stuart Shwartz, Emilio DiPietro, Matthew Smith and Jon Clear won 28-11. At home, Priory’s Keith Brinsmead, Ted Hood, John Schools and Andy Clarke won 17-15.

Priory have a nine-point lead at the top of the West Sussex League but lost their latest match 78-70 at Bognor A on Saturday, as they collected just two points.

The previous weekend, Priory had defeated second-placed Pavilion A 109-66 when they won eight points. Priory also overcame Southbourne 73-68 for six points and gained two points in a 82-72 reverse at Norfolk the previous week.
