Raiders make dominant start

WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club began their National 2 South season with a convincing 45-14 win at home to Bournemouth on Saturday (September 7).

Looking to better last season’s third-placed finish, Worthing made the perfect start when Alex Nielsen touched down inside two minutes.

Jack Maslen also touched down twice in give quick succession in the first half and Nielsen got his second as Matt McLean converted two of them as Raiders led 24-0 at half-time – having already sealed the four-try bonus point.

Charlie McGowan and debutant Jordan Burns also scored converted tries to make it 38-0, before Bournemouth fought back and scored two late converted tries.

Worthing had the last word, though, when Maslen offloaded to Ollie Luke and McLean added the extras to make the final score 45-14.

Raiders coach Kieron Dawson was delighted with his side’s performance and said: “The great thing about it was we played well and scored some great tries but came off disappointed after we let them in for 14 points.”
