More than 1,500 runners are entering the event, which will also act as the Sussex 10k Championships.

The race is run by Worthing Harriers and many local charities will be supported, with large teams running on behalf of St Barnabas House, Chestnut Tree House, Ferring Country Centre and Action for Deafness.

Race director Gavin Stephens said: “It’s by far the biggest field ever registered for the event and we are looking forward to welcoming the county’s elite to Worthing.

“More than 25 per cent of the field will also be running the 10k distance for the first time, which is fantastic to see. Completing a 10k race is a big achievement and I’m sure the Worthing crowds will help cheer those first-timers home to the finish line.”

The race begins and finishes on Worthing Promenade, opposite Western Place. There is a cash prize of £1,000 for the first man who runs under 30 minutes or the first woman who runs under 34 minutes.

In the male elite field, last year’s winner, Neil Boniface, returns to defend his title, with competition expected from Worthing’s Darryl Hards and Chris Thomson. In the female race, Worthing’s Emma Macready is in the form of her life and could go close to the 34-minute barrier
