Record numbers for annual Hangover-5

The event is the first race of the West Sussex Fun Run League season and the five-mile route takes runners from Hill Barn recreation ground up to the edge of Cissbury Ring and back.

On a mild and dry day, there were 415 finishers in the senior race and 32 in the junior race.

The race attracted runners from 75 clubs from around the south east and beyond, including two from France.

The winner was Tom Owens, of Shettleston Harriers, in Glasgow, in a time of 28min 49sec, followed by Crawley’s Paul Navesey in 31-04 and Portslade Hedgehoppers’ Stewart Gregory in 31-32

Micaela Floyd, of Tuff Fitty, was first home in the women’s race in 37-46. Lewes’s Sally Norris was second in 39-04 and Jessica Chen finished third in 39- 15.

A junior race around the recreation ground was also held and first home for the boys was Arunners’ Alex Halfacree in 4-05. He was followed by Worthing Harriers’ Tom Ridley in 4-26 and Toby Bull in 4-48.

In the girls’ race, Lily McCardle, of Sussex Trail Events, was first home in 4-56. Arunners’ Hannah Halfacree was second in 5-08 and Steyning’s Lois Claridge was third in 5-53.

n Goring Road Runners meet twice a week for training sessions and are active members of the WSFRL.

The club caters for runners of all abilities and starting soon will be organising evenings specifically for complete beginners.
