ALEX WILCOCKSON has returned to Worthing Raiders Rugby Club and is looking to challenge for promotion next season.
Raiders finished fifth in National 2 South last campaign but the club are targeting promotion into National 1 in the new season and that is what attracted Wilcockson back to Roundstone Lane.
The 22-year-old centre, nicknamed Scrappy, played for Raiders in the 2011-12 season, before he moved away to study at Exeter University and played for Worthing’s National 2 South rivals Taunton Titans.
Wilcockson, who has also played for Exeter University’s first team, Exeter Chiefs’ A League side and England Students since his first spell with Worthing, is targeting promotion and said: “That is definitely something we are looking to do.
“The club explained that to me before I committed fully to them as I want to be playing for a side that is wanting to push on and win things.”
On returning to Roundstone Lane, Wilcockson said: “I’m very pleased to be back at Raiders. It was the club that gave me my first opportunity at men’s level and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
“I learned a lot first time round and had a great time with the group of boys then. The club has moved on since then and I feel the calibre of player at the club has also gone up.”
Worthing head coach Kieron Dawson said: “I’m really looking forward to seeing Alex back.
“He’s really filled out since he was last with us and we know what a good player he is. He has an England Students cap as well, which is a very competitive team and shows he’s been doing well.”
Dawson is hoping to add more players to the squad for the new season as Raiders target promotion back into National 1. He went to watch the Bournemouth 7s at the weekend and said: “There were some very good players there and we’re already talking to a lot of players about next season.
“We want to build a good squad and be in a position where we can have two strong teams, with Raiders and Raiders A, as it’s a real priority to get promoted next season.”
