Dawson still looking up rather than down the table

WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club head coach Kieron Dawson felt his side deserved more, after they lost away to Redruth on Saturday.

Raiders slipped a place to fourth from bottom in National 2 South with the loss – two points above second-from-bottom Chinnor – but Dawson is still looking up the table, rather than down.

He said: “We were very happy with the performace and played pretty well in both halves. The two sinbinnings really hurt us and the second yellow left us down to 13 men for ten minutes playing uphill and against a gale.

“We definitely deserved more out of the game – we could have won and didn’t even get a bonus point.

“The top two is maybe out of reach now this season but it’s something we’re still shooting for.

People talk about us being in a relegation battle but I don’t see it that way. All of the top six will be playing each other, so it will give us a chance to go under the radar and move up the table.

“We’re starting to get players back available as well. We were without eight of our starting line-up on Saturday – Archie White, Ben Loosmore, Rob Smith, Ryan Storer, Finlay Coxon-Smith, Alex Nielsen, Pete Austin and Owain Davies – and still almost won.”

Dawson was part of the Classic Lions squad who won the World Rugby Classic final in Bermuda earlier this month.

The Lions defeated the All Blacks 22-5 in the final and Dawson said: “Last year, we lost to the All Blacks in the final when they had a team full of stars.

“It was great to get the win, with a number of expats there watching us.”
