McLean kicks Raiders to home win

MATT McLean kicked four penalties as Worthing Raiders Rugby Club won a hard-fought match 12-10 at home to Redruth this afternoon.

Raiders took the lead in the National 2 South after just two minutes when McLean kicked his first penalty of the game.

A couple of handling errors prevented Worthing from extending their lead, before Redruth’s Murray Westren was off target with a penalty on 32 minutes.

McLean’s second penalty made it 6-0 on 35 minutes and that was the way things stayed until half-time.

Raiders’ Finlay Coxon-Smith was held up on 43 minutes after a burst forward, before McLean was successful with his third penalty of the game on 46 minutes to make it 9-0.

Redruth had Craig Williams sinbinned on 50 minutes but the visitors got a try back while a man down on 57 minutes. Ben Priddey touched down after Redruth drove forward from a line-out but Dan Rutter was unable to convert.

McLean’s fourth penalty gave Worthing a 12-5 lead on 73 minutes but the visitors got their second try with three minutes to go. Redruth again drove forward from a line-out and Christopher Fuca touched down, although Rutter missed a kickable conversion which would have levelled the score as Raiders held on to win.
