WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club beat Redruth 27-25 in a thrilling National 2 South game on Saturday (September 3).
Matt McLean kicked Raiders into an early lead with a penalty but Redruth powered back to lead 13-3 after 20 minutes.
Kiba Richards broke and passed to Sam Hewick, who dummied his way past Redruth’s last man, to touch down Worthing’s first try and McLean added the extras.
McLean levelled the scores with a penalty on 31 minutes but Redruth were back in the lead just three minutes later when Aaron Penberthy sent over a penalty.
Another McLean penalty made it 16-16 two minutes later and Worthing went into half-time with a 21-16 lead after Rob Smith went over in the corner, although McLean was unable to add the conversion.
Penberthy reduced the deficit to two points early in the second half, before McLean sent over a penalty for Raiders after Redruth had Thomas Duncan sinbinned.
Penberthy nailed another penalty to again get his side within two minutes on 56 minutes.
McLean and Redruth’s Matthew Shepherd then traded penalties before Redruth had a golden chance to snatch the win with two minutes left but Shepherd pulled a penalty, from a good position, wide of the posts.
