WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club head coach Kieron Dawson has told his players the shackles are off and to go out and enjoy themselves on Saturday.

Raiders were relegated two Saturdays ago at Old Albanian and their short-lived journey in National 1 comes to an end on Saturday, fittingly, against their opening day opponents, just eight months ago, Wharfedale.

Raiders narrowly lost away to the Yorkshire Dales side in September and now host the established National 1 side in Saturday’s curtain call.

Dawson – who will rest a few of his battle-weary players for the final weekend – wants to reward the Roundstone Lane faithful, however, for their impressive support this season.

He said: “It has almost been a sense of relief that it was all over and the end was in sight. We are already planning now for next season. A lot of lessons have been learned by the squad and the coaching staff, myself in particular.

“The crowd at Roundstone Lane has been superb for us this season. We are still third in the table of biggest crowds for the whole season and that is a testament to the supporters. We have been good at home and that is down to the supporters. We will bring in a few guys that deserve a crack, but it will be by no means a second team.

“We can come out and play and it will be nice to have the shackles off and no spectrum of relegation hanging over us – we can just go out and enjoy the game.”
