Raiders win away to Richmond

WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club made it back-to-back wins in National 1 with a thrilling 39-34 win at Richmond this afternoon.

Ina back and forth encounter, Raiders defended superbly in the closing stages to hold on for the win.

Joe Govett kicked Worthing into a fourth-minute lead with a penalty but Richmond responded with a Rob Kirby penalty just four minutes later.

The hosts went ahead on 11 minutes when James Greenwood went over in the corner and Kirby added the conversion, via a post.

Govett cut the deficit with another penalty, before Raiders touched down three tries in seven minutes through Finlay Coxon-Smith, Kiba Richards and Ben Dudley.

Govett added two of the three conversions as Worthing led 25-10, before Richmond finished the half strongly.

Caldon Pike touched down on 33 minutes and Simon Ackroyd with the last play of the half and, with both converted by Kirby, Worthing led by a point at half-time.

With Worthing a man down as Simon Gaynor was in the sinbin, Richmond went ahead ten minutes into the second half when the hosts drove forward from a lineout and Afi Okeshola touched down but Kirby was off target with the conversion.

The hosts extended their lead on 56 minutes when they again used their drive to good effect and Will Warden touched down to give Richmond a 34-25 lead. Kirby was unable to add the extras.

Richmond had Harison Edwards sinbinned on 63 minutes and Raiders touched down twice while the hosts were a man down.

Joe Burns and Liam Perkins both touched down, with Govett converting both, before Raiders stood firm under increasing pressure to earn a hard-fought win.
