A 21-16 defeat at fellow strugglers Henley Hawks on Saturday saw Raiders drop to second from bottom.

Worthing now trail Henley, who sit fourth from bottom and just outside of the relegation zone, by three points, with Loughborough Students two points further ahead.

Third-from-bottom Cinderford are two points ahead of Raiders and also have two games in hand.

Raiders finish their season with games at home to fifth-placed Blaydon (Saturday), at eighth-placed Old Albanian (April 12) and at home to ninth-placed Wharfedale (April 26).

Dawson said: “It was a hard one to take on Saturday as the lads all put in a monumental effort. We were definitely the better team but we just couldn’t get over the finish line.

“We’ve still got a fighting chance of survival, though, and we’ll keep fighting until the end. We’ve just got to try to learn from our mistakes.

“It’s a must-win game on Saturday now.”

Raiders hope to have Richard Palframan available on Saturday but captain Matt Miles (torn pectoral muscle) is likely to miss the rest of the season.
