WORTHING Rugby Club’s ladies team overcame local rivals Lewes in their first league game of the year on Sunday.
The game was played at Worthing, owing to flooded pitches at Lewes and, in the previous league meeting, Worthing scored 65 points against a developing Lewes side.
However, four months into the season meant Worthing were not complacent in their approach and fully expected a tougher game.
Worthing kicked off and Lewes were met with a strong defence to their attack. After just a few phases of play, Worthing intercepted a pass and shot through to score their first points at the hands of centre Lauren Sandford.
Worthing’s second try came in quick succession and from another interception. This time it was winger Sarah Wakeford, who snatched the ball out the air and got within five metres of the line, before scrum-half Rebecca Lovenbury scored.
Worthing led 10-0 after just ten minutes and then scored two more tries just before half-time.
The first came from centre Megan Priest, a regular on the Worthing scoresheet. She burst through the Lewes defence to put her team 15-0 ahead. The next try was scored by skipper Jo Wakeford just before the whistle, after a long period of scrappy play.
A third interception from Worthing sent Wakeford storming down the right wing to score in the corner to make the score 20-0 at half-time.
The second half was a more even contest. The sticky conditions took its toll on an over-worked pack of Worthing forwards.
Worthing still had most of the possession and, despite a flurry of attacks from Lewes which took them to within five metres of scoring, the home team stayed in control.
The final points of the game came from a second try for Priest to make the final score 25-0.
Worthing are now just a point behind second-placed Canterbury, with all to play for in the remaining games.
Worthing play Beccehamians at Roundstone Lane on Sunday, with a 2pm kick-off. New players are welcomed throughout the season with no experience necessary. Visit www.worthingrfc.com to get in touch with the team.
