Having beaten Guernsey home and away last season, Worthing were looking to take the win again in the National Challenge South East South 1 match. However, Guernsey made a strong start and an early converted try gave them a 7-0 lead. Excellent tackles by Holly Blackhurst and Giorgia Palethorpe denied Guernsey but the visitors used the strength in their forwards to drive the game and had moved 26-0 ahead by half-time.

Worthing began the second period well and fly-half Amy Martin made some excellent runs and after a team effort, winger Martha Gosney touched down but Martin was unable to add the extras.

The points boosted Worthing’s morale but Guernsey continued to play a hard game and ran out comfortable winners.

Worthing captain Lauren Sandford said: “The ladies fought to the end and for that we can celebrate. There is a lot for us to work on in the upcoming weeks.”

Worthing travel to Lewes on Sunday.
