RUGBY: Worthing captain James Arthur's weekly column (April 1)

THERE were several changes to the squad on Saturday as we welcomed Bridgwater to the rugby park.

Matt Mclean and Greg Sullivan returned to the starting line-up, Andy Rogers came in at scrum-half and Steve May stepped into eight, as both Rob Smith and Semi Taulava remained injured.

On a spring day, the first half started brightly and we pressed hard from the kick-off.

This resulted in two tries in the first few minutes, something that is becoming a bit of a habit for us at home.

We then seemed to take our foot off the gas, sat back, and allowed Bridgwater to play some rugby.

This period of the game was littered with errors from both teams, and only good defence prevented Bridgwater from scoring more than their one unconverted try.

In truth, we were always in control, at times we just got a little frantic in our play and again tried to play too much rugby. Although we did manage to score another try.

At half-time, we went in 22-5 up, but a little frustrated. A challenge was set by the coaches at the break and the boys responded well.

The second half was some of the most clinical and enjoyable rugby that we have played all season, as we put Bridgwater to the sword.

We managed to keep the penalties and mistakes to a minimum and played some fantastic running rugby.

We scored great individual tries and also some very well-worked team ones, with both forwards and backs showing great pace and handling skills.

With the tries flowing from both the forwards and the backs the game was, hopefully, an enjoyable match for our spectators to watch after so many nail-biters.

Matt Mclean made a good return, kicking 24 points and scoring a try.

The final score of 69-5 demonstrated just how much we dominated the game and gave us not only another five-point victory, but our biggest win to date as a National 2 side, showing how far we have come from last year.

There were two other high-scoring wins from Saturday, going to Clifton and Richmond.

Clifton's big win against Canterbury means that we now go three points clear of Canterbury with a game in hand. However, with five games left in the season, we do not have an easy run with only one home game remaining.

This Saturday sees us away at Rosslyn Park, who are sitting second in the league. We hope as many of you can make the journey to support us in what we hope will be another exciting game.
