Runners out for annual beach race

ARUNNERS Running Club hosted its annual Beach Run last Wednesday when 268 runners took part in the run along Littlehampton seafront.

The event is part of the West Sussex Fun Run League and started next to the Windmill Theatre, before the five-mile route went out towards East Preston and back, mostly on the sand beyond the ends of the breakwaters as the date of the race has to be carefully chosen to make sure the tide is out.

As it was Arunners’ home fixture in the WSFRL, none of their 140 members took part, but around 60 were involved in organising the event, marshalling the route and selling refreshments.

In the junior event, the winner of the boys’ race was Arunners’ Rupert Guiel in an impressive time of 4min 15sec and the girls’ winner was Harriet Catling.

The first three men home in the senior race were all from Burgess Hill Runners. Paul Sargent won in 30-27, James Collins was second in 30-32 and Darryl Webb finished third in 30-41 The ladies’ winner was Debbie Ward in 34-39, followed by Linda Toombes.
