Six golds for Horsham athletes at Sussex Indoor Championships

In total Horsham returned with six gold, six silver and four bronze medals in what was a strong team display.

The pole vault competitions produced a good number of medals for Horsham. Calum Neil won the under-15 boys’ event, clearing 3.30m and in the under-17 Men’s event Joe West cleared 3.30m to win on countback over team mate Richard Mason, whose clearance at this height was a personal best.

Elly Cave also set a pb when she cleared 2.70m in the under-17 women’s event to take the silver. Connor Dearden, competing in the Surrey Championships held at the same venue, improved his personal best by 36cm to win gold in the under-15 Boys’ event, clearing 2.60m.

Jordan Levey was in tremendous form in the under-13 Boys’ 60m, where he ran out a clear winner in an impressive 8.05m. He then went on to win the long jump with a leap of 4.11m.

Jack Milnthorpe took the gold medal in the under-17 Men’s 60m hurdles in a time of 9.48s, and he went on to take a silver medal in the high jump, his pb of 1.75m edged out on count back.

The under-17 women’s 60m saw Sophie Spinner and Kat Bajorinaite gain silver and bronze medals.

Having both run pbs in their heats of 8.01s and 8.09s, they ran 8.02s and 8.22s in the final.

Kat had earlier taken a silver medal in the 60m hurdles with another personal best time of 9.34s.

Also in the under-17 women’s events Lucy Milnthorpe leapt 1.50m to take a bronze medal in the high jump.

James Hedges, despite a slow start, took the silver medal in the under-20 men’s 60m, running 7.47s, and Jacob Dean took the bronze medal in the under-17 men’s long jump with a leap of 5.63m.

Caroline Wirth, showing her versatility, having only last weekend come third in the Schools Cross Country, took a third place in the under-15 girls long jump with a pb leap of 4.54m.
