The 18-year-old from Felpham has a wealth of playing experience having played for Sussex for many years, most recently for Sussex ladies at the end of last year. Phillips is ranked at No1 in Sussex at 18-and-under and ladies and she is one of the top five ranked players for her age group in the south east.

Phillips joins four other coaches at Middleton. Head coach Keith Savage said: “We welcome Lisa to the coaching team and believe she will be an asset in helping develop MSC further. I have no doubt that the players will be interested in listening to and learning from Lisa’s experiences on the British ladies’ tour.”

All the coaching team at Middleton are qualified, insured and have the necessary checks to meet LTA standards. The sports club also have Clubmark accreditation.

Phillips is excited about helping players develop their game at the club where she first picked up a tennis racket. She will be coaching all ages and abilities.

Young children learn to play mini tennis using lower compression balls, smaller rackets, lower nets and smaller tennis courts so they can develop vital skills and technique. There are four stages of mini tennis – tots, red, orange and green – before progressing to yellow balls and standard-size courts, rackets and nets.

Phillips said: “When I started playing tennis there were many players of my age in Sussex who were much more talented than me. Because of my love of tennis and my work ethic, I have developed into a successful player and I’m hoping to pass on my love of the sport to inspire other players to enjoy and improve their tennis.”

Phillips will be taking both group and individual lessons and all junior players can have a free group lesson. See www.kstennis.co.uk for further details.

Phillips has also completed her cardio tennis course and will be running some lessons. Cardio tennis is a high-energy fitness workout that combines the best features of tennis with cardio-vascular exercise to provide the ultimate, full-body, high-calorie-burning workout.

Phillips said: “I burned 350 calories in half an hour of cardio tennis and some players in my group burnt even more calories. You still get a great workout even if you have never played tennis before and this should appeal to all standard of tennis player who want to improve their fitness in a fun and social environment”.
