Tutt, 27, was competing in the 105kg weight and lifted a total of 600kg at the event in Northampton – 20kg short of second place and 40kg behind the winner.

The competition was one of the selector events for the England Commonwealth Games team and Tutt is hoping he did enough to impress the selectors, as his performance saw him qualify for the Four Nations Championships on September 28 in Ireland.

He said: “To be brutally honest, it wasn’t my best performance and I could have come away with second place.

“I messed up a bit but still got on the podium, which is pretty good.

“I’d have got second it I’d made a bench press but I messed it up, which happens every now and again.

“I can’t really complain too much as I still finished third out of 24 lifters and I ‘d like to thank my coaches on the day, Tom McMutrie and Mark Marcy

“The competition was a selector event for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year, so I’m hoping to qualify for that and that’s what I’m aiming for now.”
